Nigel & Grace

Salsa dancing was what brought me and my husband together. As a social dance, Salsa allows you to meet people from all walks of life. Nigel and I first met on the dance floor. While dancing with him, I found his lead confident yet cheeky. This quality ignited a want to get to know him more. We were both enrolled in Salsa class and learned under Yanqing. Thankfully, we were given many chances to compete and perform together. Through such times of stress and enjoyment, we found a life companion in each other. From Salsa to Bachata, Merengue, Rueda and Argentine Tango, we danced together. We performed together, partied together, and even progressed to become instructors.

Along the way, we made many great friends who also served as mentors in life. Even though we came from different social circles, we all share a common interest in dance. It has been 6 years and counting, I am glad I gathered the initial courage and perseverance to learn Salsa.

Robert & Chin

Hi! We are Robert and Chin, one of the married couples who got to know each other while learning Salsa with Yanqing.

Chin and Robert started learning Salsa in Jan and Jun 2007 respectively. We were briefly acquainted at Robert’s first Salsa lesson under the SuperSaver Scheme (focus on social Salsa). Soon, Robert realised his passion for dance, so he registered for the Semi-Pro Scheme (currently known as SFDF, which focused on performance and other forms of dance, e.g. Hip Hop, Argentine Tango, etc.).

We hardly saw each other until a Rueda interest group was set-up in the beginning of 2008. Rueda is a form of salsa, except that the couples dance in a circle and each variation is executed based on the commands shouted by one leader. As there was a shortage of girls in the Rueda interest group, Robert approached Chin who agreed to participate.

Perhaps due to weekly training and common interests, friendships were bonded and shortly after, love blossomed between us.

On 14 Oct 2008, Robert proposed. On 25 Dec 2009, we were married at the studio we learnt Salsa – the place where we knew each other.

We even took our wedding album photos there...

And had great fun at our customary wedding dinner on 18 Dec 2010!

Yanqing and her team provides a platform for people who are interested in dancing, to gather together, to become friends and form part of the dance family. Even now, we still continue to dance Salsa.
